I collaborate with individuals and businesses at all levels to identify and tell their stories. I work closely with clients to craft compelling copy in the following areas, with customized packages available:

My approach to any writing project begins with gaining intimate familiarity with the subject. I thrive on meeting people and learning about what matters to them, and I approach each project on its own terms. Generally speaking, I look for points of connection, for ideas and themes that have emotional resonance, in order to craft content that reflects your voice and values. In the course of my career I have interviewed chefs, C-level executives, heavy metal bands, and winemakers for whom English is a distant second language, and I have yet to find a subject I’m not comfortable writing about.

As the editor and lead writer for Eater Portland, I am up to date on trends in search engine optimization. However, I firmly believe that SEO comes second to the story. Keywords bring people to your website; an engaging story keeps them there.

Presentations + Appearances

I regularly lead workshops on social media management, and I have appeared on a range of TV programs and podcasts talking about food-related topics. In 2015, I gave a TEDx talk on finishing your book; I have also led workshops on the subject. In addition, I have served as a judge in wine and barbecue competitions. I have a number of workshops forthcoming in 2017. For a full list, click here.

Social Media Management + Marketing

I manage or have managed the social media accounts for Edible Portland, Eater Portland, Big Weekend Calendars, the Travel & Words Conference, and my own brand, Ravenous Traveler. Since joining the Travel & Words board and taking over marketing in 2012, I have consistently grown the conference through scheduled press releases, strategic use of social media, and cross-promotion with other travel-related groups. My marketing responsibilities for Big Weekend Calendars, the best-selling calendar at Powell’s Books for seven years running, also include writing press releases and social media management.

Developmental Editing

In addition to writing, I offer editing services to help people find and develop their stories. I have worked with clients to structure books and chapters, set and stick to writing schedules, and shape and present research to make it accessible to trade audiences. My work in this area includes a collaboration with a psychologist whose book is forthcoming from Norton.

I also have experience working with non-native English speakers to craft engaging web copy, letters, and other materials.

I offer consulting related to food, wine, and travel on a limited basis.
